Allegrini Poggio al Tesoro Toscana 'Mediterra' (2018)

A fragrant and intensely fruity red wine, where the aromas of blackberries, plums and cherries are interwoven with more incisive peppery notes. The result of a winning blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Mediterra succeeds in the difficult task of expressing the rich complexity of Bolgheri's terroir with an easy- drinking, exceedingly enjoyable style.

The 2018 Mediterra, Poggio al Tesoro’s entry-level wine, is terrific. Fruit, floral and enticing, this mid-weight offering has plenty to give. I would prefer to drink it over the next few years, while the flavors remain vibrant. A burst of red berry fruit, blood orange and spice lingers on the mid-weight finish.

The 2018 Mediterra is Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (in almost equal parts with just a little more emphasis on the richness of the Syrah). This is a versatile and very well priced Tuscan red that prizes softness, the richness of its mouthfeel and the ripeness of its blackberry and cherry aromas. Those warm fruit tones cede to mild spice, light tobacco and tilled earth. The wine is bright, bold and charming in thanks to its accessible style. Drink this wine within the next three to four years.
