The Chateau du Pin 2016 is a Merlot based blend that displays generous ripe fruit and a satisfying bright finish. The wine’s color inclines to bluish-purple rather than black, while the nose displays lush raspberry and black cherry notes.
This precocious wine has great acidity in the finish that leaves you feeling vibrant and invigorated. This is a great value and at this price may become an everyday affair. For the last several vintages this wine has been snapped up almost exclusively by a few top restaurants in New York, but this year we were offered enough to put out a small offer. A blend of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Cabernet Franc (20%), this is a beautiful, classic representation of the region with lovely dark and red fruits, a hint of earth and cedar, moderate tannins and a beautifully balanced presence from start to finish.
We tasted this at our virtual tasting April 17th and it was a great wine for the price. Not a big, burly Bordeaux - it is super elegant and refined. Lighter bodied, it had all the fruit and wood notes you would expect, but smooth and soft. For the price, this is an amazing daily drinker, or stump your friends and tell them it is $50 and 15 years old - they won't be able to tell by the taste. For the money, definitely 4 stars.
