Château Lascombes, a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, is one of the largest and most prominent estates in Margaux. Its 120 hectares of gravel, clay, and limestone soils support a blend dominated by Merlot, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, yielding wines of notable structure, depth, and longevity. Distinguished by a style that marries the elegance of Margaux with greater power and concentration, Lascombes has consistently evolved under successive ownerships, combining centuries of heritage with modern precision to remain a benchmark of the appellation.
Depth, complexity and graceful power characterise this wine, which reveals all its qualities after long ageing in the bottle. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, it represents the Médoc’s winemaking tradition and embodies the great classicism of Margaux.
Blend: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. From the historic terroirs of the Château.
Aging Potential: Up to 40 years
Optimal Drinking Time: 2027-2050
96 Jeb Dunnuck Based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Château Lascombes pulls from 40% of the total production and was aged 18 months mostly in barrels (60% new) with a small portion in foudre. This inky hued beauty boasts a rich, concentrated, full-bodied, well-oaked style as well as pure cassis and darker berry fruits, some graphite, scorched earth, and licorice nuances, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. Rating: 96+
94 James Suckling This is a full-bodied Bordeaux with lots of velvety tannins and intensity. It’s a bit old-school now with so much fruit and texture, but it’s impressive, to say the least. Plenty of blackcurrant and blueberry character. Shows the richness of the vintage.
93 Decanter Perfumed and aromatic on the nose. Rich and concentrated on the palate, juicy but also there's a richness and power that focuses the black cherry and blackcurrant fruit and acidity and makes it quite serious. Tannins are grippy giving plenty of texture and structure, but this lacks a little energy and finesse. It's certainly stylish though with liquorice, dark chocolate, wet stone and tobacco notes. Tasted twice. The estate has new owners as of November 2022 with the acquisition by Lawrence Wine Estates, (also owners of Napa wineries: Heitz Cellar, Burgess Cellars and Stony Hill). The group was established by the Lawrence family, led by US entrepreneur Gaylon Lawrence, alongside managing partner and Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr MS. 2022 is the last vintage by winemaker Dominique Befve with ex-Ornellaia winemaker Axel Heinz taking over as of the 2023 vintage. Barrel Sample: 93
91 Wine Spectator Warm and caressing up front, with a velvety edge to its cassis and black cherry compote flavors, backed by singed black tea, wood spice and walnut husk notes that then leave a subtle, burly edge as they finish. A bit ambitious in style for this warm vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2038. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
97 The Tasting Panel An Earth Mother, with velvet-lined blackberry, Bay leaf, graphite, and roasted coffee bean. Chalky tannins grip the teeth, with a dusty grip. From its backbone and vibrant acidity, to its notes of dried violets on the finish, we bow to its elegant nature.
95 Falstaff Deep ruby, purple reflections. Delicate old wood spice, ripe cherries, some cassis, subtle nougat, fine herbal note in the underlay. Complex, taut and deep, very good freshness at the core, chocolatey, ripe plums. Lingers long and shows good spice on the finish. Certain ageing potential.
