The Rosso family has been an integral part of the Serra Lunga d'Alba region in northern Italy for over a century. There must be something truly enchanting and mystical about this area to have captivated this family for such an extended period, dedicating themselves to the art of winemaking. According to Davide Rosso—the latest generation at the helm of the winery—the magic of this place lies in its stark white, chalky soil, which imparts distinctive qualities to the wine, enabling it to withstand extended aging periods in barrels (ranging from 18 to 36 months).
Such is the case for Giovanni Rosso Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, a Barolo produced by the Giovanni Rosso winery using vineyards from the Italian municipality of Serra Lunga d'Alba. This town is notably one of the 11 protected under the D.O.C.G. Barolo and is part of the renowned winemaking area for this globally acclaimed wine.
Hints of cocoa, chocolate, ripe raspberry, plums and pepper on the nose. Savory and juicy, soft in the mid-palate.
Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo
In the glass, it gleams a deep ruby red, its heart bright and luminous. The nose reveals a layered tapestry of scents: succulent wild cherry, ripe raspberry, and tangy redcurrant, interwoven with whispers of Swiss stone pine, delicate rose petals, star anise, clove, and a lift of white pepper – a composition of remarkable finesse. On the palate, it marries structure with grace, its tannins silk-smooth, acidity vibrant and pure, underpinned by a cool, stony minerality. The finish lingers with a saline-mineral clarity, unfolding in harmonious complexity. This Barolo captures the breadth of Serralunga’s terroir – poised, powerful, and destined for an illustrious evolution.
94 Falstaff Brilliant ruby red with a slightly brightening, orange-coloured rim. Initially somewhat reserved on the nose, then opens up to wild berries and raspberries, with a slightly smoky note in the background and some undergrowth. On the palate with a beautiful fruit entry, fine melting and good balance, the tannins are tightly meshed and well integrated, ending in a long final on raspberries.
94 James Suckling Very classic bright garnet red color. Aromas of potpourri, dried cherries and liquorice, then firm, ripe, velvety tannins, red fruit character and elegant acidity. It shows a medium body with good concentration to age for a few decades.
92 Wine Spectator Balsamic elements of juniper, eucalyptus and wild mountain undergrowth frame the cherry and strawberry fruit in this firmly structured red wine. It is fresh and balanced but needs a few more years to consolidate.
91 Jeb Dunnuck Bright ruby with an orange tinge and tasted from barrel, the 2020 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba offers a lot of charm on the nose, with fruity and floral notes of wild strawberries, raspberries, preserved roses, and thyme. Approachable in its structure, its supple tannins are ripe and rounded, with a generous feel, and it’s light on its feet. It has a lot of finesse and elegance and will show its best in another two years and over the following 10. 91-93 pts.
