Greywacke is the personal winemaking project of Kevin Judd, one of Marlborough’s most influential figures and the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay. Established in 2009, the winery takes its name from the region’s ubiquitous greywacke river stones and focuses on expressive, thoughtfully crafted wines that highlight Marlborough’s purity and texture. While best known for its vibrant, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc—including both a classic style and a wild‑ferment version—Greywacke also produces elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. Judd’s meticulous vineyard sourcing and gentle, hands‑on cellar work have made Greywacke a benchmark for modern, terroir‑driven Marlborough winemaking.
Picture a summer picnic table – vases of white blossom, a vibrant salad of aromatic herbs with soft, yellow peach, crunchy pear and a squeeze of juicy lime; apricot sponge cake and custard tarts – a sweet-scented array of ripe deliciousness. On the palate, flavors of honeydew melon and white nectarine mingle with savory notes of crushed seashells and a hint of chalky minerality. A fruit-driven Marlborough style with generosity and weight, it delivers a luscious sense of ripeness that finishes with a mouthwatering lemon-sherbet zing.
94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2025 Sauvignon Blanc leads with a soft nose of musk sticks and brine, green apple skins, wet linen and green olive tapenade. In the mouth, the wine is tightly coiled and yet textured by pithy phenolics. The length of the flavor is long, as we have come to expect from Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc. This is a superb wine in any vintage. Greywacke is a member of the Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW). 13% alcohol.
93 James Suckling A flavorful, focused and textural sauvignon blanc with papayas, limes and stones on the nose. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Lively and succulent, with a precise palate and a long finish.
