Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin (2020)

This vintage was marked by a concentration of juice in the berries just before the harvest. The wine shows a very nice intense ruby color. The nose is complex and very expressive of red fruits and black fruits but above all the expressions of the terroirs are already noticeable.

93 James Suckling
Quite a fragrant wine for this appellation, which majors in earthy power. Bold sour-cherry and blackberry fruit on the rather generous palate, a well crafted, solid base of tannins underling all the fruit. The two sides of the wine neatly interwoven on the positively firm finish.

There are abundant blueberry and blackberry aromas, with a very fine savoury element and great finesse. The texture is structured and firm, but not heavy, and the wine lingers gently on the palate. This lovely example of village-level Gevrey is made with purchased fruit, including some classed in premier cru (about one-third).

A more evidently floral-suffused nose combines plenty of earth and anise hints with those of various ripe red and dark berries along with a sauvage character, all of which is trimmed in a discreet dollop of wood. The bright, energetic and utterly delicious medium weight flavors possess good delineation on youthfully austere and mildly rustic finale that exhibits excellent persistence. Solid quality here.
