High above the heart of Chianti Classico, perched over 500 meters in the hills of Panzano, Montefili crafts high‑altitude, low‑intervention wines that channel Sangiovese in its purest, most expressive form. Founded in 1975 with what became Panzano’s first single‑vineyard “Cru,” the estate was revitalized in 2015, yet its historic vines still anchor the iconic Anfiteatro Toscana IGT.
This single-vineyard Sangiovese from the oldest vines at Montefili represents the heart and soul of the estate. The palate is intense, with a cascade of fruits: dried cherry, ripe nectarine, orange peel and fig. Notes of cinnamon, ginger and smoke adorn an important backbone. Velvety, elegant, and unique, with a very long, meditative finish.
93 Falstaff Bright ruby red with a purple shimmer. Harmonious on the nose, ripe plum, cherry and a hint of thyme. Juicy and balanced on the palate, ripe tannins, animating acidity, lingering salty finish.
93 Wine Spectator Ripe fruit flavors of plum, blackberry and cherry are shaded by caramel and sweet spices in this dense red. Starts out supple, with a layer of firm, assertive tannins flexing on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2040. 333 cases made, 150 cases imported.
91 James Suckling Cherry with salted caramel and hints of wood. Medium body. Juicy and flavorful. A little old school but attractive. Drink now.
