High above the heart of Chianti Classico, perched over 500 meters in the hills of Panzano, Montefili crafts high‑altitude, low‑intervention wines that channel Sangiovese in its purest, most expressive form. Founded in 1975 with what became Panzano’s first single‑vineyard “Cru,” the estate was revitalized in 2015, yet its historic vines still anchor the iconic Anfiteatro Toscana IGT.
Deep ruby. On the nose, dark fruit, lavender, cloves, new leather and espresso. On the palate, integrated and fine-grained tannins provide important structure. Exotic and unctuous with a full body and highly expressive palate. Pair with grilled and braised red meats, mature cheeses, or rich pasta dishes.
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Sangiovese
93 Falstaff Dark, impenetrable ruby red. Intriguing nose, ripe plum, elderberry, some graphite and a hint of tobacco. Concentrated and harmonious on the palate, builds for a long time, fine tannins, animating acidity, savoury finish, good length.
93 James Suckling Aromas of currants, light vanilla and hints of dark chocolate follow through to a full body with intense, fine tannins and a savory finish. It’s a little old school but very nicely crafted. Cabernet sauvignon. Give this three or four years to soften.
92 Wine Spectator A dense, sinewy red marked by a mix of black currant, plum, iron, eucalyptus and thyme flavors. In the end, the tannins dominate for now yet should resolve with bottle age. An old-school version, needing time to integrate. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2045. 266 cases made, 130 cases imported.
