High above the heart of Chianti Classico, perched over 500 meters in the hills of Panzano, Montefili crafts high‑altitude, low‑intervention wines that channel Sangiovese in its purest, most expressive form. Founded in 1975 with what became Panzano’s first single‑vineyard “Cru,” the estate was revitalized in 2015, yet its historic vines still anchor the iconic Anfiteatro Toscana IGT.
Ruby‑red in the glass, this wine opens with an inviting bouquet of cherry, redcurrant, and a bright twist of orange peel. The palate is medium‑bodied and beautifully layered, offering ripe cherry and cranberry wrapped in subtle clove and warm spice. Fine‑grained tannins and lively acidity keep everything fresh, balanced, and food‑friendly.
A versatile, vibrant red that shines with grilled red meats, tomato‑based pastas, and aged cheeses.
94 Vinous
91 James Suckling Spiced and savory, this shows aromas of dark cherries, plums and hints of chocolate and licorice. Juicy and concentrated, with slightly chewy tannins. Medium- to full-bodied with a long, mineral-laced finish. Drink or hold.
90 Decanter With vineyards straddling the border between Montefioralle and Panzano, Vecchie Terre di Montefili reaches heights of 550 metres. The annata is crafted from the estate’s younger vines averaging 25 years of age. It ages in 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks. An intensely balsamic nose brandishes grilled sage and rosemary with roasted coffee and dusty earth tossed in. Tight and concentrated, the palate does hint at red berry purity, but for now it is somewhat obscured by vigorous, drying tannins. It demands more time – and some serious protein.
