Morgan Pinot Noir 'Double L Vineyard' (2019)

Conscientiously farmed since the original plantings in 1997, today Morgan’s Double L Estate Vineyard is the only certified organic vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Located at the northern end of the AVA, the vineyard’s north-south row orientation provides optimal wind and sun exposure.

The 2019 Double L Pinot Noir is rich yet energetic. Aromas of black cherry, pine forest, and rose petal are supported on the palate by flavors of red and black fruits, with a hint of cinnamon. This wine features a medium body, crisp acidity, and elegant tannins – an exquisite match for duck confit, lamb shank, or prime rib.

Tasting Notes

94 Vinous
Limpid ruby. A highly expressive bouquet evokes spice-accented red/blue fruits, potpourri and vanilla, along with subtle cola and woodsmoke nuances. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering finely detailed raspberry, mulberry, cherry-cola and candied lavender flavors that steadily deepen through the back half. Finishes gently tannic and impressively long, with the cherry and floral notes reverberating. 7% whole clusters and 36% new French oak.

Creamy cherry and spicy cola and mace aromas make for a tightly packaged nose on this bottling. Juicy, fresh flavors of strawberry sorbet, light dust and a pinch of pine needle make for an energetic and splashy palate.

A black-fruited and earthy Pinot Noir that is aged for 10 months in 36% new French oak barrels. Aromas of black cherry, huckleberry, dried rose petal, toasted clove and rosemary are prominent on the nose. The body is medium to full, acidity levels are high, but balanced, and the earthy and spicy back-palate shines throughout the lengthy finish. My favorite of this round of Morgan wines. Enjoy this now or over the next decade.
