Even though Robert Craig is best known for Cabernet, their single‑vineyard Chardonnay shows the same core philosophy: farm for intensity, keep the winemaking hands‑off, and build wines with real structure and longevity. The Gap’s Crown Vineyard Chardonnay is a perfect example. It’s one of the most expressive sites in the Petaluma Gap, and the finished wine makes that crystal clear. Craig only gets enough fruit to produce about 300 cases each year, which is why this Chardonnay is so linear, racy, and mineral‑driven—truly a standout from the top of the Gap.
The 2024 vintage on the Sonoma Coast was mild and even in terms of temperature. Meticulous farming was key to avoiding problems from the cool damp spring and warm summer. Jason and Yordanos worked with care on the wine to allow the explosive mineral and citrus components to rise to the top from the fossilized marine life that comprises the vineyard soils. A kiss of new French oak following fermentation in neutral barrels helped preserve complexity and nuance in the wine while a stiff blade of acid adds freshness. Our Chardonnay, year in and year out, is one of the few California white wines to display such a stony personality. 2024 was an ideal growing season.
