Sanford Winery is a cornerstone of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, known for its commitment to producing exceptional wines. The winery's history dates back to 1971 when the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard became the first vineyard in the region. Sanford specializes in Burgundy-style wines particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which benefit fro the cool climate and unique soil conditions of the Sta. Rita Hills.
The Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay is sourced entirely and exclusively from two estate vineyards: the historic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard (10%) and La Rinconada (90%). These iconic vineyards are nestled in the heart of the cool, coastal Sta. Rita Hills appellation.
Bright with acidity and freshness - Burgundian in style. The 2022 bursts from the glass with grilled lemons, dried flowers, and chamomile. The very seductive aromas inform the palate which is silky, intensely mineral, and wonderfully fresh. A natural paring for lighter fare, appetizers, shellfish and sushi, this wine is open, charming and delicious.
93 Tasting Panel Whole cluster-pressed and fermented in French oak, this impeccably balanced wine delivers indulgent notes of lemon bar, honeyed pear, lychee, and gardenia with reined-in richness.
93 James Suckling A delicious, generous and moderately oaked wine. It offers warm, toasted almond aromas and cool golden apple, kiwi and guava notes on the palate. Full-bodied, creamy and layered, well balanced by light acidity.
91 Jeb Dunnuck Juicy citrus, tart pineapple, and mint herb notes, as well as some classic background mineral and salty nuances, emerge from the 2022 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills, a medium-bodied Chardonnay that's nicely balanced, has bright yet integrated acidity, and outstanding length. The appellation release comes 90% from La Rinconada and 10% from Sanford & Benedict, saw malolactic in barrel (as do all of these Chardonnays from Sanford), and 11 months in 25% new French oak. Drink bottles through 2032.
90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2022 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills is a solid snapshot of Sanford's modern winemaking pure, precise and balanced. The nose is driven by pretty, straightforward orchard fruit and breakfast cereal aromas, leading to a balanced, clean palate and a refreshing finish with accents of creamy richness.
