Judgment Revisited brings back one of the most famous moments in modern wine history—the 1976 blind tasting in Paris that shocked the wine world and forever changed how California wines were perceived. What began as a quiet tasting between French and American wines ended with Napa Valley outperforming some of France’s most established producers, a result that stunned critics and became the story behind the film Bottle Shock.
This tasting isn’t a strict recreation, but a modern nod to that moment—featuring both sides of the rivalry and the styles that defined it. We’ll taste through Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa alongside benchmark wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux, exploring how these regions compare today and how much has changed since that original showdown.
We’ll be tasting:
- Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 2023 — Napa Valley
The winery whose Chardonnay took first place in Paris, helping put California on the global stage.
- Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Purcelles’ 2024 — Burgundy
A benchmark expression of white Burgundy, representing the tradition Montelena was measured against.
- Freemark Abbey ‘Bosché’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 — Napa Valley
One of Napa’s historic producers, offering a mature look at California Cabernet.
- Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 — Mt. Veeder
A classic, structured style of Napa Cabernet that leans more Old World in approach.
- Château Montrose 2021 — Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux
A powerful Left Bank Bordeaux, representing the French benchmark for Cabernet-based blends.
- Heitz Cellar ‘Martha’s Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 — Napa Valley
An iconic Napa bottling that helped define the region’s reputation for world-class Cabernet.
Join us as we revisit the rivalry that changed wine forever—this time, with a chance to decide for yourself.
