Mediterranean Islands – A Journey Through the Sea's Forgotten Vineyards
Some of the most compelling wines in the world come not from famous continental appellations, but from the windswept, sun-scorched islands scattered across the Mediterranean Sea. Join us for Mediterranean Islands, a guided spotlight tasting celebrating the rare and remarkable wines of Cephalonia, Corsica, Sicily, Sardinia, Mallorca, and Cyprus—six islands, six distinct identities, one unforgettable evening.
We are delighted to welcome Laura Atbashian from the Domaine & Estates division of SGWS as our guest for the evening. Laura will guide guests through each wine, sharing the stories behind these island terroirs—how volcanic soils, coastal winds, and centuries-old indigenous grape varieties produce wines unlike anything found on the mainland. Island winemaking has long operated at the margins of the wine world's attention, and that obscurity has been its greatest gift: here, ancient grapes survive, traditions endure, and winemakers work with varieties that exist almost nowhere else on earth.
From the crisp, mineral Robola of Greece's Ionian coast to the volcanic intensity of Etna, from the maquis-scented hills of Corsica to the sun-drenched limestone of Mallorca, this tasting is a passport to places most wine lovers have never explored—and once discovered, cannot forget.
Wines Featured
- Rhombus Robola 2024 — Cephalonia, Greece | A rare and electric white from one of Greece's most prized indigenous grapes, grown on the limestone slopes of the Ionian island of Cephalonia. Expect bright citrus, saline minerality, and a stony precision that speaks directly to the sea.
- Domaine Giacometti Patrimonia Cru de Agrigate Réserve Rosé 2022 — Corsica, France | Corsica's rugged northern appellation of Patrimonio is home to some of the island's most structured wines. This rosé blends Corsican character with French elegance—aromatic, textured, and beautifully complex.
- Murgo Tenuta San Michele Etna Rosso 2019 — Sicily, Italy | Grown on the slopes of an active volcano, this Nerello Mascalese-based red is the very definition of terroir-driven winemaking. Silky, haunting, and layered with dark fruit, ash, and wild herbs, Etna Rosso has captivated the wine world's imagination for good reason.
- Deperu Holler Famillia Rosso 2022 — Sardinia, Italy | Sardinia is a wine island unto itself, shaped by ancient Nuragic culture and grape varieties found nowhere else. This red offers a window into the island's soul—rustic, warm, and deeply expressive of its sun-soaked, wind-swept landscape.
- Mesquida Mora Sincronia Tinto 2023 — Mallorca, Spain | Mallorca has quietly emerged as one of Spain's most exciting wine regions, blending indigenous varieties like Callet and Mantonegro with Mediterranean freshness. This wine reflects the island's new wave of thoughtful, terroir-focused producers.
- Tsiakkas Vamvakada 2021 'Lemesos' — Cyprus | Cyprus is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, and Tsiakkas is among its finest producers. The Vamvakada is made from an indigenous variety of the same name, offering a rare and soulful red that connects drinkers to thousands of years of winemaking history.
