Stark-Condé is a family-run winery making handcrafted wines using tried and true traditional methods. The family property in the Jonkershoek Valley is 600 acres with 85 acres under vine. In addition to being viticulturally ideal, the estate is visually spectacular and attracts visitors from afar. Meticulous viticulture, selected harvesting, hand grape- sorting, small-batch fermentation, patient barrel maturation — these are the guiding philosophies behind the wines. The carefully-crafted wines speak with personality of a particular terroirThis wine is primarily built around a very stoney vineyard that just seems to produce better and better quality as the vines age. Typically of our vineyards, it makes an elegant, floral wine rather than a big in-your face style.
Deep purple-tinged color. Concentrated dark fruit aromas with licorice and violet and white pepper notes. The palate is rich and broad with layers of fruit and a fine-grained tannin structure.
Grapes: 98% Syrah, 1 % Roussanne, 1%Viognier
92 Vinous The 2020 Syrah, with 1% each of Viognier and Roussanne to lift the perfume, includes 50% whole bunches raised in used larger oak barrels (the élevage will be finished in concrete from the 2022 vintage). This has an attractive nose of dark berry fruit, undergrowth, black pepper and a touch of leather. I like the complexity here. The medium-bodied palate has fine delineation. It’s an elegant style of Syrah, well-balanced with a harmonious, smooth finish, salinity. Finely-crafted.
