Viña Real Reserva is a red wine from Rioja produced by the Viña Real, a member of the CVNE group. The winery is located on top of Cerro de la Mesa in La Rioja Alavesa. Viña Real Reserva is made primarily from Tempranillo (90%) supplemented with Mazuelo, Garnacha and Graciano (10%).
For processing, one cold maceration and an alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks takes place at controlled temperatures. After the fermentation process happens, Viña Real Reserva is aged for 22 months in new barrels with a manual racking every 4 months. Before bottling the wine is clarified. Once bottled Viña Real Reserva rests for two years.
Deep ruby red in color, clean and bright. The nose shows intense notes of ripe red fruits and notes from barrel aging such as toast, spices and smoke. The palate reveals a well-structured wine with firm but polished, rounded tannins and notes of fruit compote and elegant oak. The long finish adds to the ability of the wine to age well for a considerable time in bottle.
Blend: 90% Tempranillo, 4% Garnacha Tinta, 3% Graciano, 3% Mazuela
94 James Suckling A juicy, outstanding reserva that shows good weight and structure. Probably a bit more opulent this year, but still in line with CVNE's house style, which does not produce weighty wines. Fresh, structured and fine-boned, with excellent length. Drink or hold.
93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2019 Viña Real Reserva was cropped from a healthy year that delivered a ripe wine without excess and 14% alcohol while keeping the freshness and balance. It matured in barrel for 18 months. The nose is very 2019, with notes of damp earth and leather, powerful but with elegance and balance. The vintages are quite marked in this classical Viña Real range, which consists of this Reserva, the Crianza and the Gran Reserva.
91 Wine Spectator Lively and light on its feet, but with good focus to the ripe red currant, black cherry, black tea and mineral notes. Fresh and chewy through the finish, which shows a sweet hint of sassafras root. Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano.
93 Decanter Awarded Silver in 2019 Decanter World of Wines - Very pretty, perfumed and elegant with red and black fruits seasoned by hints of spices. Impressive freshness, ripe tannins.
