Established in 1435, the Mazzei family is one of Tuscany’s oldest wine dynasties and they have been cultivating vineyards and crafting fine wine for over 600 years in Fonterutoli in the heart of Chianti Classico. Leading the portfolio today are the Marchesi Mazzei, brothers Francesco and Filippo, as well as Filippo’s son Giovanni, the 25th generation. All the estates are farmed with a commitment to reducing environmental impact and fostering sustainability. From their state-of-the-art low-impact, gravity fed cellar to their massal selections and clonal research, the current generation pursues innovation that elevates their wines and protects their ecosystem. This balance of preservation and evolution is rooted in the Castello di Fonterutoli, the historic family seat.
Bold, dark fruit is accessorized with red plum, citrus peel and subtle spices, which delivers the ideal combination of elegance, structure and minerality. Pairs well with aged cheeses, truffled pasta or egg dishes, hearty stews and braised game meats.
95 James Suckling Attractive aromas of red plums, dried cranberries, spiced citrus peel, red spices and bark. Medium- to full-bodied, broad and structured with ripe and well-integrated tannins and succulent fruit. Tense. Shows notes of rose petals with crushed rock minerality. Lingering and vivid finish. Drink or hold.
94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Made with 100% Sangiovese (six Sangiovese clones plus eight massal selections of the same grape), the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli offers rich texture, lots of dark fruit and an overall oak-driven approach. It ages in 500-liter French barrel for 18 months (with 50% new oak) and then rests in cement for four months. It finishes softly with cinnamon, baking spice and a sweet note of white chocolate. Indeed, the modern winery at Castello di Fonterutoli boasts an enormous underground cellar with all the latest technology.
93 Wine Spectator Lush and velvety, offering cherry, plum, earth and iron aromas and flavors, plus a hint of oak spice notes. A lively, firmly structured red, with refined tannins gracing the finish. Best from 2026 through 2042. 5,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.
92 Vinous The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a potent, earthy wine. Black cherry, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice, tobacco and dried herbs all form the backbone of this powerful earthy wine. This opens nicely with time in the glass. Pretty floral and white pepper accents lift the finish.
