What to Expect at a Tasting

What to Expect at a Tasting

By: Vintage Wine GuyComments: 0

We do a lot of tasting events here at Vintage. Our regulars have gotten the feel of what to expect, but we know the first time can be a little daunting. Here is an overview of what to expect at our different tasting types.

Walkaround Tastings - If the description of the tasting includes "Walkaround" expect a very casual cocktail party style tasting. You will be able to do your own thing, taste what wines you want (revisit your favorites) and you can roam the store or grab a table and nibble some cheese - up to you. Expect a chatty atmosphere. Come when you want - any time in the window, usually 7-8 - and leave when you want. You can always ask questions about the wines but there won't be a formal program. After the tasting, wines are available for purchase by the glass and by the bottle if you want to linger.

Seated Tastings - if the description of the tasting includes "Seated" expect a little more structure. Tastings start on time (usually 7) and include a guided tasting of the wines with a presentation about the winery, grapes, styles, etc. Plenty of time to chat with friends during and between wines around the presentation. Wines are poured one at a time by our team, and we work our way through the line up together. Tastings usually last 1-1.5 hrs and after the tasting, wines are available for purchase by the glass and by the bottle if you want to linger.

Winery Spotlights - Mostly seated tastings, but occasionally in our walkaround format, Winery Spotlights feature multiple wines from the same winery. We often have winemakers, owners, or other winery representatives leading a conversation about the winery and wines. Always very informative.

Seminars - Seminars are like our seated tastings but extra nerdy. Expect to go deep in a wine topic with extra history, science, and general wine nerdiness. Very educational. Be ready to get in the weeds.

Others - We also have the occasional party, whether our Birthday Bash or Magnumpalooza. Some of these are limited to members of our Imperial Chateau Society, others are open to everyone. We will give you all the details you need in the description of these special events.

Hopefully that helps you get ready for your first tasting. They are always super fun and interesting. You will be surrounded by a mix of regulars and casual tasters - always a good group. Dress code is pretty  casual - if you would wear it to your favorite restaurant it will be perfect.

We look forward to seeing you!
